Analog Fractography & Reactive Environments

It is the mandate of Trypton Media to re-purpose the video medium as an interactive psychedelic experience. It is the understanding of its principal artists that the video medium has the potential to express the most abstract laws of the universe. These same perceptions can be attained through other paths, yet we at Trypton have chosen the television itself as our ally in attaining and expressing these experiences. The recursive dynamic, or feedback, is the basis of all fractal function in quantum physics. The inherent relationship created by pointing a camera at a TV is the basis of our work. The key to having an audience understand these extremely complicated abstract concepts is not to communicate with words, but with light, in a live interactive demonstration.

Interpretive Feedback - An audio synchronized demonstration of fractal geometry created entirely in real time, with analog gear. The artist points a camera at a TV which shows what the camera sees. Using mirrors, kaleidoscopes, lasers, props, and strange sci-fi gizmos, the artist interprets the music with which they are collaborating. By manually beat-matching effects, colours, and transformations within the fractal imagery we can immerse the audience in a synchronistic environment. This is a visual stimulus on par with the powerful abstract rhythms of today's music.

Interactive Installation - As our understanding of feedback becomes clear we advance our own relationship with the medium. Our interactions with it have become very intimate. The feedback loop between artist and medium has been closed with the audience watching from the outside. The latest developments in the display of the work involve incorporating the audience into this loop. This allows individual audience members to have their own intimate relationship with the experience. Instead of a TV, the artist points the camera at a projection screen creating a feedback loop between them. The 'Interactive Dance Portal' appears as a swirling vortex inviting individuals to play within it. The range of effects and the constant variation of individuals ensure a unique sensory experience for every performance. This installation has been unparalleled as a visual element in a dance party environment.

Favorite book: Stranger in a Strange Land, Robert Hienlen
Astrologically: Virgo
Favorite day: Today
Titles: Performing Abstract Video Artist, Special Effects Compositor, Mad Scientist, Party Jedi Cyber-puNk.

Grady is a navigator of trans-dimensional spaces. Obsessed with the abstract nature of the universe, he is constantly striving to find new ways to explore and express ideas that are intrinsically beyond his own comprehension as a self aware monkey on a big spinning rock. Fractals are his language and he speaks fluently and loud. Interested only in "the real thing" Grady has abandoned the use of digital algorithms to "simulate" fractals, and instead prefers to explore the same dynamics directly in their primordial form of light. Video feedback has been the major tool of his work, but stands mainly as a metaphor. The medium, perceiving into itself, explores dynamics of a macro-cosmic scale. We all look into ourselves to perceive a bigger picture of which we are only a minute part.

The geometric systems that define our reality are beautiful as they are complex. Grady enthusiastically serves up infinite permutations of them, live and to the beat. Grady is an un-paralleled visual musician, always ready to navigate the audience through an immersive fractal journey.

Merlyn

aka The Fool

Sex: Male
Favorite food: Slow Food
Favorite organized noise: Anything but New Country
Favorite book: Fragments of a Lost Teaching, Ospensky
Astrologically: Capricorn
Favorite day: Tomorrow
Titles: Fool, Video Feedback Visual/Noise Artist

Merlyn discovered video feedback soon after discovering the works of Marshal McCluhan. Some of Merlyn's interests include consciousness, psychological projection and self observation. These are re-occurring themes he explores in his art. His performance work is an exercise in maintaining attention, i.e., an open eyed meditation. His abstract print work(sourced from video feedback originally) allows the viewer to explore their own internal library of definitions and categories much in the same way one sees fantastic imagery in cloud formations.

Recently Merlyn has been experimenting mainly in the noise scene of Vancouver with 'Pandora's Boom box'. A video and audio feedback installation that treats the eyes and ears of the audience to something truly out of this world.

Roslin

aka Renegade Pixie

Sex: Female
Favorite food: Blue potato fries w/ plum sauce
Favorite organized noise: Definitely Dub
Favorite book: Jitterbug Perfume, Tom Robbins
Astrologically: Capricorn
Favorite day: All of them, except for that time when......
Titles: Performing Abstract Video Artist, Graphic Designer, Web Designer,Organizer of Chaos, Face Painter Extraordinaire

Roslin has been an artist of many forms for many years. Hiding out in the mountains of BC when we found her, mesmerized by the phenomenon of video feedback she soon integrated into the Trypton team. When Roslin got into video feedback, she was a "Natural". Performing with Trypton Media for more than five years now, she has brought her female energy and unique talents to Trypton and has helped make it what it is today. Aside from her live performance, Roslin has focused on using mediums such as pen, pencil, paint, glass, wood, and photography. She became inspired by the mandala created by video feedback, and began to draw mandala in her own style with only her eye for a measuring tool. All hand drawn originally, she moved onto painting and computer techniques (not to mention web development and graphic design).

About Booking Trypton Media

Live Analog Fractography

Let’s start with the basics. Televisions, video cameras, video processing gear, etc (remember we do our show completely live with no presourced material). All these units are piled into one ‘Chaos Lab’. This is where we make some of the most intricate of ‘real-time’ fractals by simply manipulating specific knobs in the Chaos Lab to create some pretty weird effects. These images then get projected onto a wide variety of surfaces, but mostly white walls or large, white lycra screens.

Depending on the event, these visuals can be displayed creatively and effectively to give different immersive environmental effects. Imagine sitting in a chill room surrounded by constantly moving fractal imagery that is synchronized to the music being played.

Enhance DJ or Live PA performances with an audio synched, real-time, fractal backdrop. This kind of effect is done front, or rear projection depending on space available and desired effect.

Environments using 35mm Fractal Slides

Our fractal slide show incorporates one or two matching displays using ektographic slide projectors with dissolve units that give the effect of a subtly changing fractal environment. For example, We have used several mesh screens in layers to give a 3D effect on a walkway or entrance to an event. This application can be used in a wide variety of ways from deco reinforcement to a stand alone installation.

Tryptonmedia is now capable of turning your high resolution digital art into 35mm slides for a larger and brighter display. While keeping your original art from getting damaged, lost, or just unseen.

Interactive Installation

This is probably the most popular, and the most challenging, of our installations. The Interactive Installation starts with a large screen (usually 16’x9’) with a large platform for people to get up and dance on (platform and screen size may vary depending on size of event and location). Our 'Chaos lab', usually perpendicular to the screen, involves many pieces of processing gear and custom built robotic camera mounts that create, in real-time, a moving, spiraling vortex that is reactive to the dancing and interaction on the platform.

We can guarantee your audience will have a unique, once in a lifetime experience at your event. Every one of our shows is different and we like it that way.

To see more of our interactive installation you can check out some of our web clips to get an idea of what we’re on about (spiraling vortexes and all)

Special thanks to the West Coast of BC's psychedelic trance scene, all of the people who have shared their energy and spirit in encouraging us to continue with this crazy mission of psychedelia. Also to Mr. Don Powley(aka The Iron Monkey) for sharing his amazing talents with us over the years and helping us to build weird things to play with on and off the dancefloor.
